The Illuminatia Office of Public Apologies (OPA) is a government office operating within the Illuminatia Department of Public Information (DPI). The OPA manages the outward communication of all apologies, admissions of error, requests for forgiveness, expressions of regret, and other confessions of fault or acceptances of guilt on behalf of the Illuminatian government and its agencies.

Office of Public Apology communique are often a result of inbound complaints on behalf of Illuminatian citizens fielded by the Department of Ombudspersonship (DOO), which is responsible for receipt of communications from constituents. However, the OPA may also be motivated to spontaneously issue apologies if a government office, department, or bureau independently discovers a governmental error and wishes to make the general public aware of the situation and express its regrets.

OPA expressions of remorse or guilt are sometimes accompanied by information regarding steps the government is taking to redress grievances or make good any losses realized by individuals. Information regarding real compensation and coordination of basic details regarding such reparations are also initially communicated by the OPA before the logistics of such transactions are forwarded to the appropriate government fiduciary agencies.

Most apologies are issued to the general public. They are made broadly available and are widely disseminated. These apologies are often addressed to the citizenry at large, but may also be addressed to certain subsections of the Illuminatian population which are acknowledged to be most directly affected by the situation requiring apology. Sometimes these apologies are disseminated publicly but addressed to a specific individual or individuals, as appropriate, naming those persons and making it publicly known that the government has in some way wronged those individuals.

However, in other cases, an apology may be required in cases in which it would be harmful or inappropriate to disclose the message or the details of the situation to the general public. These situations are handled privately by the Office of Confidential Apologies (OCA). The OCA, in these cases, privately sends a communique to the affected individuals, stating any private information directly to the recipient of the apology, keeping any proprietary information between only the government agency in question and the private party.
