Preapocalyptic fiction is a popular genre of storytelling in Illuminatian literature and theatre. Preapocalyptic fiction is a commonly published category of written novels and the genre is also frequently developed into popular feature-length films, wireless and telekinephotography dramas, stage plays, theatrical musicals, and newspaper serials.

Illuminatia's preapocalyptic genre of writing, rather than proposing a post-apocalyptic setting in which a catastrophe has already taken place, instead proposes a background that is relatively realistic and normal in the context of the present day, but incites speculation as to the anticipated apocalyptic situation that might develop as a result of the storyline, without in any way illustrating this expected calamity or its aftermath.

This genre of storytelling often incorporates very mild components of fantasy, dystopianism, or horror, with otherwise sinister elements in conjunction with a reasonably recognizable realistic and believable fictional setting to prepare a storyline that might lead up into an apocalyptic scenario.

Preapocalyptic fiction narratives habitually put forward a relatively realistic setting with slight augmentations that are revealed with increasing frequency or severity throughout the life of the story. Often, the preapocalyptic story might be an entirely true-to-life story taking place in the present day but with one minor adjustment gradually exposed to be a potential menace through the life of the story.

Stories of this genre almost always conclude just before the imagined apocalyptic situation might erupt, leaving the reader to actively contemplate what might happen after the end of the story as a result of the otherwise semi-normal story setting.

The preapocalyptic genre of writing provokes the audience to actively anticipate and speculate the nature of the potential apocalypse and the divergent scenarios that might result from the preapocalyptic setting. Illuminatian audiences energetically pursue these discussions and debates in communal venues, engaging in organized book group parleys and other public conversations about the possible consequences of such a storyline and how society as it is known might be impacted if a similar narrative were to actually happen.

The Illuminatian intellect is particularly drawn to this genre because of its ability to provoke further thought and intellectual pursuit as well as the genre's ability to cause the public to engage in productive dialogue that might prevent such a situation from happening in reality.

Preapocalyptic fiction is often used as a precursor to further public discussion and debate about the imagined results of preapocalyptic scenario. Political and civic discourse has been known to heavily benefit from pervasive public consideration and reflection brought about by preapocalyptic literature and theatrical productions, potentially solving political, business, and scientific problems that might have otherwise caused some level of harm of misfortune to Illuminatian civilization. The Illuminatian Department of Calamity and Catastrophe (DCC) and its Office of Disaster Prevention (ODP) have been known to encourage preapocalyptic fiction writing and discourse, sometimes with monetary encouragement, as a way to ready the public for potential disasters and cataclysms and to prevent the imagined catastrophes from occurring.
