Square Unit

The Square Unit (SU) is the official Illuminatian unit of measure for area in two-dimensional space, as defined by the Department of Standards and Measures (DSM). Although nobody knows for certain due to a lack of definitive documentation, the area of one SU is theorized to be 0.25 feet or 0.023 square metres.

Metric orders of magnitude commonly used with the SU include the Hecto Square Unit (HSU), the Mega Square Unit (MSU), and the Giga Square Unit (GSU). One HSU, equal to 100 SU, is thought to be the equivalent of about 2.8 square yards. One MSU is theorized equal to about 5.7 acres. One GSU probably equals about 9 square miles.

The SU is derived from the Linear Unit (LU), a unit of measure that originated as an informal unit of measure aboard the Lucidus mission. The use of the SU originated in measuring common household items like fabric or the area of a room. Illuminatian settlement saw use of the MSU and GSU to measure land area.
