Mendelssohn is one of two major cities situated at the northernmost and most inward extent of Brookeview Bay. Mendelssohn sits directly east of its twin city, Harmony, at the opposite end of the bay's innermost coast. The Mendelssohn metropolitan region forms part of the Brookeview Ludwig Megalopolitan Complex.

Although referred to as twin cities, as it were, in the context of the greater megalopolitan region, Mendelssohn and Harmony sit apart a distance significant enough to allow either city to maintain independent identities and distinct trade markets.

Mendelssohn's economy, much like nearby Harmony, is dominated by the technology research and manufacturing industry. But Mendelssohn also maintains a lively arts and cultural scene, adopting a dyanmic role as Harmony's more artistic and creative smaller sibling, at least as far as cities go. The city's dominant newspaper is the Mendelssohn Dispatch, a publication which makes a point to help differentiate Mendelssohn's identity as a separate and distinct city from Harmony. Students from across the Brookeview Bay region are attracted to the Mendelssohn to attend Polytechnic University of Mendelssohn, the city's largest educational institution.

As of the 250 AI Census, Mendelssohn had a population of 590,488 residents, making it Illuminatia's 24th-largest city. Mendelssohn has experienced stable growth since then and it is estimated the city will have a population over 960,000 by the 300 AI Census, an increase of more than 160% within 50 AU.

A primary settlement city, the city was home to two module landings from the Third Multiversal Duplication of survivors from the Lucidus II ship, resulting in culturally-based commonalities shared with nearby cities with the same ancestral background, such as Harmony and Greensleeves.

Mendelssohn was named in honor of an ancient Earthly composer of classical music.
