River Marlene

Location of the River Marlene in central Illuminatia

The River Marlene is by many accounts Illuminatia's longest river, flowing from south to north through much of central Illuminatia. The river's source is in the Transilluminatian Range in west-central Illuminatia. The River Marlene's northerly terminus is in the Anglo-Hungarian Bay in north-central Illuminatia at the city of Serenade.

Nearly all of the waters of the eastern flank of the Transilluminatian Range north of the Mystic Pass eventually flow into the River Marlene. Water from the vast majority of the Illuminatian interior ends up in the River Marlene system. Major tributaries to the River Marlene include the River Evelyn and the River Timmons.

The River Marlene is a major water transportation route for approximately the northern half of its length. To the present day, the most-frequently traveled land transportation route between Serenade, on the northern coast, and Rhapsody, on the western coast—closely follows the River Marlene for much of its length.

In addition to Serenade, the largest city located upon the River Marlene, other major population centers along the river's length include Swan Lake, Prokofiev, and Saint-Saëns. Smaller cities adjacent to the river include Nutcracker, Khachaturian, and Bizet.

The regions adjacent to the length of the River Marlene are populated by descendants of the third multiversal duplication of the Lucidus I ship. The river played an irreplaceable part in allowing this population of settlers to explore a sprawling extent of central Illuminatia's interior and eventually settle that area.
