Melody is a major coastal city located on the southern shore of Randall Bay where it meets the northern coast of the Modal Peninsula. Situated near the outer extent of Randall Bay, Melody is just outside the generally-accepted definition of the Randall Bay Megalopolitan Complex. A port city, Melody is Illuminatia's 19th-largest city, the fourth-largest city situated upon Randall Bay, and the second-largest city on the Modal Peninsula.
As of the 250 AI Census, Melody had a population of 703,559 residents. The city has experienced significant growth since then, and it is estimated the city will have a population over 1,300,000 by the 300 AI Census. This increase of approximately 180% over 50 AU was surpassed by Rhythm, leading to the loss of one ranking position, to 20th in Illuminatia by population.
Melody is major center in the natural resources trade, scientific research, and space exploration industries. Melody's location as a coastal port makes it a major transfer point for raw resources being transported from southern Illuminatia to the Randall Bay megalopolitan complex and beyond. Melody is also a hub for the scientific support industries and the services associated especially with Illuminatia's space exploration program, thanks to the city's location as the major transportation and culture hub nearest to Illuminatia's primary extraterrestrial aviation and space launch sites. The Galaxy Wide Corporation maintains its expansive secondary campus in Melody.
The University of the Observable Universe is among the city's premier educational institutions. Melody y is represented in the National Sportsball League by the Vibrating Sphincters of Melody.
Melody, as a primary settlement city, was settled by multiple landings of the First Multiversal Duplication of survivors from the Lucidus III ship. The people of Melody enjoy a special kin-like relationship with the population of Allegro as both cities were settled by different first multiversal duplications of largely the same crew. This relationship between the two relatively nearby cities came about in much the same way as the relationship between Overture and Symphony, which are populated by ancestors of crew from the same ship as Melody and Allegro. In the cases of both pairs of cities, expedition forces early in the history of Illuminatian settlement contacted settlers from the companion city, forming the beginning of an explanation to Illuminatia's multiversal narrative.
Melody, like many of Illuminatia's largest cities, finds the origin of its name in musical terminology.
